CommentsThe Champions League action really heats up again as the last four teams left in the competition do battle for a place in the final. All four will fancy their chances of going all the way, and each side genuinely has something to aim for other than for the glory of winning. Both Madrid clubs, Atletico and Real, play the first legs at home which may hand the advantage to their opponents, Chelsea and Bayern Munich, if either can get at least one away goal. That said, the Spaniards have some of Europe's best attacking talent at their disposal and all are in great form at present. It promises to be an intriguing pair of matches. If the west London side thought their passage to the final was going to be easy, they only need remind themselves of the result and performance from the 2012 European Super Cup. On that occasion, Chelsea were destroyed by Atletico Madrid, with Radamel Falcao the architect of the Blues downfall. Falcao may have moved to pastures new, but with Diego Costa and David Villa in situ, Atleti still have an attacking threat every bit as exciting and devastating as when the Colombian ran riot. Any Jose Mourinho side is always built on defensive excellence and this year's vintage has proved no different. Both John Terry and Gary Cahill have been superb throughout the campaign, but they will need to be on their toes in this match. Further, Mourinho will want to see an immediate reaction from his players after the devastating Premier League loss to Sunderland, which all but ended their title hopes. Costa is a reported €60 million target for Mourinho, per El Confidencial, and an interview with Diego Simeone for Al Primer Toque via ESPN. The naturalised Spaniard is a centre-forward straight out of the old school and would likely have no problems settling into the more physical demands of the Premier League. World-Herald editorial: Service first is sound policingShare Omaha Police Chief Todd Schmaderer set a strong tone for his department’s officers with a few words to 40 new recruits. Schmaderer told the aspiring officers to maintain their humility despite their power as police, to grow and nurture the attitude of service. It is an important message, even for a department enjoying an uptick in public perception. Taken to heart, it can improve our city’s safety. Those words were just one of several promising steps the department has taken recently to work more closely with the people officers serve. Much of modern policing is built on relationships and trust. Witnesses are more likely to come forward to the Officer Joe they know. That’s why it’s good to see the department show commitment to a culture that encourages improved interactions with the public. As true in government as in business, customer service matters. And it matters as much to gang members as it does to potential witnesses. Even people who know very little about gangs or their recruitment of Omaha kids should find comfort in the department’s proactive approach. Another step was the hiring of former Boys & Girls Club leader Alberto Gonzales as South Omaha’s first gang intervention specialist. He knows the turf. He knows the kids. More importantly, many of the kids in gangs know him. They trust his knowledge of their world. Gonzales, 56, once ran with gangs. He spent his days with drug dealers and violence. He was lucky. He lived long enough to leave. His hiring to engage gang members and show them a way out is a model the department has used to some success in north Omaha. Former gang member Chevist Johnson is leaving a similar post up north soon and will need to be replaced. He has shown the model can work. Omaha’s thoughtful approach to policing is not soft on crime. It offers kids as young as elementary school age a chance to avoid trouble altogether or to turn things around. Because if they don’t, they’ll catch the attention of the Omaha police gang unit. And that rarely works out well for the bad guys. Here, police, prosecutors and federal investigators work together to put drug dealers and gang bangers behind bars. They get things done. But it’s even better when police notch those silent victories — the ones where a kid puts down the pipe or the gun and instead grabs a lab coat and a job. Those are the victories all should savor. THE annual Easter Monday Sports and Family Day is expected to attract hundreds of spectators as the organisers are promising a fun-filled day at the Penal Rock Road Recreation Grounds in Moruga tomorrow. The event is being hosted by the Penal Rock Road United Sports and Cultural Group and its president, Keston Reveiro, said that the action begins from 6 am with a marathon starting from the Moruga Police Station in Gran Chemin through Bois Jean Jean and Basse Terre Villages then to the grounds at Herrera Trace off Penal Rock Road (14 mmm) also called Santa Maria Village. This year marks the 46th anniversary of the event which considered the most popular event in the community as throughout the years, hundreds of persons have flocked to the area to participate or just be spectators. Reveiro said among the array of events will be kite flying and goat races. Other activities will include cricket and football competitions, an Easter Parade Bonnet competition and races. He promised that there would be events to suit people of all ages. “The cricket and football start at 10 am. There will be a bouncy castle for the children and lots of activities like hoop games for the adults. Returning import Gabe Freeman was unable to lift Ginebra to a crucial win, entering the quarterfinals. Dr. Noel Fermindoza, 45, and his son Timothy, 10, arrived during the second quarter of the game between Alaska and San Mig Coffee. Noel and Timothy were excited to watch the second game of the doubleheader: Ginebra versus Rain or Shine. They settled into their courtside seats located near the tunnel leading to the locker rooms. Noel carried a small backpack with his left hand and, in case a PBA player walked by, alertly held a silver digital camera with his right hand. Timothy couldn’t sit still. Noel flew from Cauayan City, Isabela to Manila to attend his graduation ceremonies after completing his master’s degree in hospital administration at the Saint Jude Graduate School. He decided to bring Timothy along. They flew to Manila together so they could go to the Smart-Araneta Coliseum on Easter Sunday, as father and son, to watch Timothy’s favorite team, Ginebra, and Timothy’s favorite player, Japeth Aguilar. Timothy, a varsity player for the Centro de Cultura School in Cauayan City, answered, “Dahil kay Japeth. Whenever I see fathers and sons watching games together, I’m transported back to the time my father brought me to my first PBA game. It was 1983. It was also a doubleheader at the Araneta Coliseum: Gilbey’s Gin versus Great Taste Coffee, San Miguel Beer versus Crispa. You tend to remember odd things from significant events. I remember thinking, “Grabe, ang lapad ni [Gilbey’s Gin import] Lew Massey.” I remember someone in the crowd, presumably a Great Taste supporter, yelling, “Joel Banal, haaay, ang gwapo mo!” I remember San Miguel guard Bokyo Lauchengco’s “Prince Valiant” hairstyle. I remember Billy Ray Bates in all his wrist-banded and head-banded glory. I was a Toyota fan yet I was still enthralled by Billy Ray’s wizardry. Wow. Billy Ray Bates. It was my first time to witness him in action, freed from the box of our grainy 10-inch Sanyo TV. It was my first time to see him dunk in person. It was my first time to see anyone dunk in person. Once you see someone fly like Crispa’s Billy Ray Bates, you never forget Billy Ray Bates. I remember sitting still for four hours. Maybe, because of the atmosphere – the huge crowd, the leather seats, the dome, and the amalgamated smell of cigarettes, sweat, soda, and hotdog sandwiches - I was mesmerized. Maybe I was awestruck beyond words. But I just sat there looking stunned, like any grade school student who was watching Star Wars for the first time. My father and I were in the lower box section behind the south goal post. He wasn’t a die-hard basketball fan. I was eight and painfully shy. Occasionally, we cheered. Generally, we simply, quietly shared the experience. Timothy, in his yellow shirt, shorts and Crocs, bounced all over the courtside section. He jumped from his seat when he saw E-Cow, Alaska’s mascot, offering a high-five. He clapped animatedly when Cyrus Baguio hit a long jump shot. He stood near the court, behind taller, older Ginebra fans during the pregame warm-ups. He strained his neck, tiptoed as best as he could, so he could stare at Japeth who stood on the other side of the court. He ran to the floor to join a free throw shooting contest for kids during halftime. He cheered when Ginebra players scored. He frowned when Rain or Shine players made field goals. Timothy froze in disbelief when Gabe Freeman, Ginebra’s new recruit, sank shot after shot in the opening quarter. Noel’s eldest child was watching Freeman, an import powered by jet fuel, for the first time. When Freeman paused at midcourt, flexed every flexible muscle and howled to energize Ginebra fans, Timothy’s eyes widened like Commonwealth Avenue. It must have felt like seeing an Avenger from just twenty feet away. While this was Timothy’s first time to watch PBA games live, this wasn’t Noel’s first time to see PBA players in action. In 1988, Leon Fermindoza, an engineer, brought his teenage son, Noel, to the ULTRA (now Philsports Arena) to watch Ginebra (then known as Añejo) versus Purefoods. That was Noel’s first opportunity see Robert Jaworski, Alvin Patrimonio and Jerry Codiñera up close. Like Timothy, Noel nagged his father to bring him to a PBA game. Directed by Anne Kauffman, the cast comprises Ismenia Mendes (Family Furniture), Maxx Brawer (Don't Go Gentle), Zoë Sophia Garcia (La Ruta), Rebecca Henderson (The Whale, The Retributionists), Will Pullen (Marie Antoinette) and Chris Stack (Marie Antoinette, Killers & Other Family). "Carla (Ms. Garcia) agrees to marry Reggie (Mr. Stack) on one condition: to break down any walls between them, they'll reenact their individual sexual histories with one another, good and bad, for better or worse," press notes state. "Years later, these stories bring unexpected hope to their household, now forced to confront those barriers a second time. Kirk Lynn's tough-love comedy navigates the boundaries of intimacy, finding startling empathy in the story of a father hell-bent on saving his family. Dr. Mark Jordan, the head of an equine veterinary practice in Carmel, Putnam County, visited one of New York City’s stables and was surprised to find the horses were living in appropriate conditions and receiving excellent care. BY Dr. Dr. Mark Jordan is a horse owner and the head of an equine veterinary practice in Carmel, Putnam County. Last month, I accepted an open invitation to visit some of the city’s carriage horses at the Clinton Park stable. As the head of an equine veterinary practice in Carmel, Putnam County, I have been examining and treating horses for more than 32 years. I felt it was my responsibility to investigate the horses’ treatment from my own perspective as a veterinarian, horseman and advocate of animal rights. The purpose of this visit was to evaluate the horses’ living conditions as well as their current health. These horses are living happy lives with owners who truly care for their well-being. Before our trip to the city stable, my colleague, Dr. Michelle Singer, and I were both skeptical of the care that these horses were receiving. But we were pleasantly surprised by what we found. Contrary to what many may believe about these horses and the environment that they live in, the horses are in good health and are living in an appropriate stable with excellent care. These horses are being treated with pride and compassion, often by their individual owners/drivers. These horsemen provide care for these horses on a daily basis. On the days the horses do not provide carriage rides in Central Park, they are hand-walked to make sure they are out of the stall and exercised every day. Next Enlarge Contrary to my preconceived thoughts, these horses do not live in straight stalls in which they are unable to move or lie down. Instead, the horses were housed in comfortable, clean, spacious box stalls, which allowed them to lie down in comfortable dry bedding. The box stalls are also large enough to allow the horses to move freely. The horses are also being provided with quality food and water throughout the day. Mayor de Blasio and activists say it's inhumane to have horses on the street, but Jordan, a vet, says the horses are happy and in good health. After my first visit, I returned unannounced to talk with management and personal horse owners to better understand their perspective. Upon arriving, I still found the stables to be in the same good conditions that I had observed in the initial visit. During this second visit, after the stable inspection, I observed some of the horses arriving back from the park and other horses being hitched up to go out to the park. The horses did not appear at all overworked upon their return, and the outgoing horses were ready to take their shift. The horses at Central Park all were in good weight, well shod, and prepared for their carriage work that day. These owners/drivers are proud of their animals and provide them with excellent care on a daily basis. I strongly support the continuation of these carriage horses in New York City as an equine veterinarian, long-time horse owner and horseman. These horses are being loved and cared for earnestly and deserve the right to continue on as a historic tradition of the city. Motion Captured In Contention 4 Quadrant Reviews Trailers In Theaters On Demand DVDs Film Nerd 2. By Liane Bonin Starr Sunday, Apr 20, 2014 10:30 PM The many annoyances of starting a business, any business, are well-fertilized comic turf, and "Silicon Valley" has managed to take broad swipes at quite a few in a short window of time. This week, Richard discovers the name is the thing, and while the business name he wants -- Pied Piper -- inspires near universal revulsion (Jared makes the point that the fairy tale "is about a predatory flautist who murders children in a cave"), he's willing to fight for it. I'm not sure if this week is more about Richard showing he has the guts to go far or simply proof that he has that asshole quality Erlich so values, but it was pretty funny nonetheless. As we know, Richard wasn't able to cash Peter's $200,000 check last week because he hasn't filed the name Pied Piper as a business yet, and Jared has even worse news -- Pied Piper is already the name of a sprinkler company. Richard decides to visit the owner, a crusty old guy who isn't all that interested in that dadgum technology. While it's pretty clear this is a set-up -- crusty doesn't mean stupid -- one of the funnier moments in the show is watching him soften up toward the twitchy Richard (Thomas Middleditch), noting, "my son has Asperger's, too. Richard thinks his handshake deal settles the matter (it doesn't) and celebrates by buying a margarita maker for the guys. It's at BevMo that Richard stumbles across another business speedbump -- a clueless wannabe app creator (and BevMo employee) with a horrifically bad idea, more interested in complaining about his plight than helping Richard carry his box to the car. Later, when Richard returns the margarita maker, this same employee has heard buzz about Pied Piper -- and somehow takes Richard's inability to tell him how stupid his app idea is as an endorsement. It's more of a Hollywood moment than a Palo Alto moment, I think (on another show, this guy would be tucking a bad script into Richard's hands), but still effective. While most of the storyline revolves around Richard's quest to be the one and only Pied Piper in town (and most of the punchlines go to his housemates slamming both the name and the cheesy shirts he has made -- Dinesh describes the design as, "It looks like a guy sucking a dick with another dick tucked behind his ear for later, like a snack dick"), there's still room for Peter Gregory. Well, a little bit of room. It's hard to imagine the show without Christopher Evan Welch (who died last year -- though there's no mention of that on his HBO.com bio). His awkward billionaire genius is spot-on and maybe my favorite performance in the entire show. This week he was given a slim storyline about the crazy-like-a-fox logic behind Peter's fixation on Burger King, but Welch owned the few scenes he was in. I hate knowing there are only so many of these in the can. But Welch isn't surrounded by slackers. This week's banter between Dinesh and Gilfoyle about the latter's illegal immigrant status (he's from Canada) was predictable stuff, but Kumail Nanjiani and Martin Starr had the old married couple banter needed to make it sing. I'm not 100 percent sold on Erlich as a character. Sometimes he seems too dunderheaded to have ever lucked into Silicon Valley money (his blathering to the press only served to create problems for Richard this week), and I had higher hopes for his mushroom-induced hallucination -- the idea that he'd be chanting the Hooli slogan of "making the world a better place" was a disappointment. Still, he serves a purpose, giving Richard a place to dump his worries -- even though they're almost always dismissed. After the expected banter between Richard and the Pied Piper sprinkler guy (he discovers Pied Piper is all over the Internet because of Erlich and demands $250,000, after which Richard finds his inner asshole long enough to negotiate him back down to the agreed-upon $1,000), Richard walks away with the win -- and a name everyone working with him really hates. It's two steps forward, one step back, and the tango continues as Hooli's competing product steamrolls toward production (we're reminded by a fabulously ridiculous ad about how smaller files could lead to "smaller" cancer and world hunger). The ticking clock of Big Corporate in the background adds some urgency to Richard's plight to undercut the silliness, and there's no reason to believe Mike Judge will serve up a happy ending -- we've already been reminded about Beta being trumped by VHS. Yes, criticisms that "Silicon Valley" is a marginally smarter "Big Bang Theory" aren't wrong, but it's not a bad way to spend half an hour, either. silicon valley, Kumail Nanjiani, Thomas Middleditch, Martin Starr, Zach Woods, T.J. Thousands of faithful attend the 2014 Hollywood Bowl Easter service, which was a joint effort organized by the Christian Assembly Church of Eagle Rock, Fellowship Monrovia and Bel Air Presbyterian Church. People hold their hands up during prayer at Hollywood Bowl’s annual Easter service on Sunday. Under a powerful sun, thousands flocked to a festive Easter service Sunday at the Hollywood Bowl to hear messages of hope, faith and redemption. The morning outdoor service — which was hosted by three Los Angeles-area churches — was punctuated with joyful singing led by a large voice worship choir, a professional orchestra and a modern live worship band led by Christian artist Tommy Walker. “This Resurrection Day is a cosmic event,” the Rev. David McKechnie, interim pastor of Bel Air Presbyterian Church, told the crowd on a stage adorned with white Lilies and 1,000 stems of various yellow flowers. “It’s really the hinge of history. It’s the most important day of this year or of any year. In addition to that, it’s a victory over death, fear and inhumanity. Meaningless is canceled. We have lots to celebrate. Bel Air Presbyterian Church, which has helped organize Easter at the Hollywood Bowl since 2006, joined forces with Christian Assembly Church of Eagle Rock for a second consecutive year and for the first time with Fellowship Monrovia, which opened two years ago in the San Gabriel Valley. The first Easter service at the iconic venue occurred in 1921 and though it’s had some interruptions, it’s been an annual tradition for years. Easter is to Christians what the Super Bowl is to many Americans — the most important day of the year, the Rev. Enock De Assis, associate pastor at Bel Air Presbyterian Church, said. “We came to celebrate in the city because we love the city,” De Assis, a Lake Balboa resident, said before the service. “We came to the center of Hollywood at a time when there are so many conversations about faith and culture and all the recent movies we’ve had, like ‘Noah’ and ‘Heaven Is for Real.’ It’s so important for churches to continue to be in dialogue with the city where live. Rev. Albert Tate of Fellowship Monrovia, whose congregation has grown to 1,500 members in two years, gave a rousing sermon arguing that the resurrection is relevant to people’s lives today. When Jesus rose from the dead, he proved to Satan — who thought he had a ‘checkmate’ — that the match had not ended, he said. “The resurrection matters because (Jesus) is on the throne,” Tate told the crowd. “You’re not without hope. You’re not without promise. You’re not with purpose. The King has a plan for you. He has promises for you. His love is yours to be received. After years of wanting to see Easter at the Hollywood Bowl, Linda Holt was thrilled she had finally made the trip from Orange County this year with her adult daughter, Jenna. “It was inspiring and emotional; it was just fabulous,” Holt, who attends a church in Tustin, said after the service. “We got here at about 8:30 a.m. this morning and saw (the crowd) growing and growing. It was wonderful. Ryan Elliott of North Hills attended the service with his wife, Jayne, and her mother, Valerie Gordon, of Northridge. Elliott, a member of Bel Air Presbyterian who has attended the service in past years, said while the weather was quite warm this year, he enjoyed hearing sermons from pastors of the other two churches. “You don’t realize all the great churches around here; to get a sample from each was a really good thing,” he said. “Sometimes we get prejudiced about our own church and say ‘ours is the best. Shauna Black of Monrovia attended the service for the first time with her husband James, and their three young children, Jaiah, 5, Jai, 3, and Jairen, 1. “It’s amazing; these three churches getting together in a space like this,” she said. “Good service. New Senior Pastor for Bel Air Presbyterian Church, Rev. Drew Sams, 33, of Thousand Oaks was also introduced to the crowd on Sunday. Although he grew up in Los Angeles and had attended many concerts and orchestral performances at the Bowl, this was his first time celebrating Easter here, he said. “It’s a mix of emotions,” Sams, who attended Bel Air Presbyterian as a college student at USC, said before the service. “It’s exciting. Nearly 80 judges and prosecutors will be transferred to new jurisdictions today in a move that the Justice Ministry maintained would curb corruption, despite more sceptical assessments yesterday from legal observers and the opposition Cambodia National Rescue Party. According to Sam Prachea Manith, chief of cabinet at the Ministry of Justice, 78 court officers will leave their current positions, with some advancing in the ranks and others moving laterally to similar positions in different provinces. “Judges [and prosecutors] must not be allowed to stay anywhere for a long time because this can breed favouritism that makes it difficult for them to decide the case,” Prachea Manith said. However, CNRP lawmaker-elect Eng Chhay Eang expressed doubt that the movements would have any effect. “The movement of judges from one place to another is not deep reform; it is a lie,” Chhay Eang said. “If we want to have deep reform, we must not allow court presidents and judges to be involved in political parties. Legal expert Sok Sam Oeun also took a dim view of the moves, saying that changes to the actual structure of the courts would be “a good reform”. “But if we reform by changing people from one place to another and the work system is still the same, it is not a reform. Meanwhile, 40 judges and prosecutors past the age of retirement were granted permission by King Norodom Sihamoni on April 6 to continue working, despite a 2005 royal decree requiring judges and prosecutors to retire at 60, an official at the Justice Ministry has said. “The reason why the ministry has requested the King allow them to continue performing their work is because they were good people, and have more work experience,” the official said, speaking on the condition of anonymity. Oeun, the legal expert, said it was common practice in the developed world to allow judges to work on after reaching retirement age as long as they were fit for service, but advised against allowing them to hold leadership positions. No, the little things, the quiet times, the small details, offbeat, quirky recollections, are what linger. March 25th, 1989 is no different. For left winger Colin Patterson, perhaps the most fond remembrance is of sitting in the old Montreal Forum, a shrine, beside Lanny McDonald, an icon, in the gathering silence before puck-drop for Game 6. “The rooms were so small, and there was this pillar there,” recalls Patterson a quarter-century later, “so nobody could see us. Lanny looked at me, kinda smiled, and said ‘You know, Patter, I scored my first goal in this building. I’d like to score my last goal here.’ And I said: ‘Mac, know what? I’d love to get one, too. “Sure enough, we both scored that game. For backup netminder Rick Wamsley, who saw all of 20 minutes action during the two-month run, the cameo-keepsake moment occurred afterwards, in the chaos of a Stanley Cup-winning dressing room. “I’m bent over to get a champagne bottle,” reminisces the Ottawa Senators’ goaltending coach. “It’s bedlam in there, right? Those tiny, tiny rooms. So cramped. And Theo (Fleury)’s already down low like this” — bends down and begin to furiously shake an imaginary bottle of Dom Pérignon — “and he uncorks it. Pop! Just fires up and hits me right in the middle of the forehead. “The first thing I’d stopped in a month. All these years later, what spits out of the memory banks first for coach Terry Crisp is an absurd bit of hi-jinx involving his friend and assistant, Tom Watt. “To this day,” he grunts with delight, “what sticks in my mind is Tom Watt. After the game. We’ve won. Well, Tom Watt is just sitting on a little bench with his back up against the wall. He’s got one of those championship caps on, with the tag still attached, hanging there. It’s on backwards. “The emotion, the adrenalin, is still pumping, of course. “He’s holding a beer in one hand, crazy look on his face, and he says ‘You know, Crispie. This, right now, blows my mind ...’ Then he leans back, the beak of the cap up against the wall, and as he pushes his head back the friggin’ hat lifts off his head like the lid off a pot. “We laughed SO hard. Like four-year-olds. As if it was the funniest thing in the world. Ever. “I can still close my eyes and see it. Tom leaning back, the cap lifting up … ‘You know, Crispie, this, right now, blows my mind. “But that’s what happens when you win a Stanley Cup. It turns you back into a kid. Those kids, the Calgary Flames’ class of ’89, have all grown up, gotten older, moved on, of course. They’re greyer (or thinner) up top and in most cases heavier around the middle now. Businessmen and oilmen and coaches and junior hockey GM. Fitness gurus and human-rights advocates and colour commentators and radio pundits. Life doesn’t stop just because you fulfil a lifelong ambition. But in this town they remain caught and frozen in time somehow. The indelible images of that championship march from Vancouver to L.A., through Chicago and finally Montreal remain etched in our minds. And most especially from May 25th. McDonald, out of the press box and back in the lineup, peeling away after scoring off a lovely pass from an impossibly young, impossibly prolific Joe Nieuwendyk. The old and the new, collaborating on the culmination of a dream.The indomitable one, Doug Gilmour, swatting a waist-high puck past Patrick Roy to score. Local boy Mike Vernon’s arms raised in triumph at the end. Al MacInnis hoisting the Conn Smythe Trophy and doing the “I’m going to Disneyland!” advertising op. The crowd at the Forum, still shocked, classy enough to stick around to stand and applaud the men who’d just vanquished their heroes. No intruders had ever hoisted the Cup on that hallowed ice.If anyone symbolized the victory, gave it additional emotional resonance, that man, of course, was Lanny McDonald. It was his Cup as much as Calgary’s.“It had been a tough year,” admits McDonald, in and out of the lineup all season, all playoffs, as a new generation began to make its imprint.“I’d be the first to admit it. When you felt you still have something to contribute from a playing standpoint and from a leadership standpoint, it’s tough. I feel very, very fortunate to have had the finish I did.“I found out I was going back into the lineup after warm-up. (Assistant coach) Doug Risebrough called me into the trainers’ room. How many more of those are we going to win?’ Kinda like ‘(Bleep), we’re only 23, buddy. What are you getting so worked up about.’ I shouldn’t have said it. It must’ve cursed me. He went on to win two more. And I didn’t win another one.“So that night, on the blueline, watching Jim (Peplinski) and Huntsy and Lanny go out there, seeing Joe tearing up on the blueline when Lanny lifted the Cup, is what I remember most. And me, like ‘Relax, guys we’re going to win more of these. A LOT more.’ ”Roberts chuckles softly, shakes his head at the folly of youth.“And now here we are, 25 years later. Marysville police received a report at 10:48 a.m. April 11 of a possible sexual assault and possession of child pornography at a location on Riverwind Drive. Police said the individual who made the report asked to remain anonymous. The incident is under investigation, and no arrests were made as of late last week. His ex-wife, who is constantly causing trouble with the kids, continues to ask him out for coffee, for dinner, to join her skiing. Answer: Although your question sounds like “How can I get my boyfriend's wacky ex to stop overstepping her bounds?” it's more about your boyfriend not being honest with everyone concerned (ex-etiquette rule No. 8, Be honest and straight-forward). The reason his ex is asking is because she thinks she will get a yes — no one continually invites someone somewhere when they know they'll be turned down. So, I don't know what happened for that “short while” you broke up, but if she's acting differently now than she did prior to your leaving, it's time to talk to your boyfriend. If this is the way she has always acted, it's time to talk to your boyfriend. What I'm trying to say is, just about any way you look at it, it's time to talk to your boyfriend. When faced with an aggressive ex, it's their ex's responsible for setting the record straight. That means it's your boyfriend's responsibility to set clear boundaries so his ex understands where she stands. He might like all the attention — or he might feel letting her think there is something between them will enable him to see the kids more often. Truth is, if he's leading his ex to believe anything but the truth, it could backfire. Know the old saying, “Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned?” Well, “Hell really hath no fury like a woman scorned twice. He's playing with fire when he's playing with the affection of the mother of his children. Really bad ex-etiquette. And, although it sounds as though you don't think it's a possibility, if he's not being straight with his ex, then he's playing you, too. Even if it's all an innocent misunderstanding, your guy still has to take control of the situation so that there will be no misunderstanding in the future. Aside from being aggravating for you and his ex, his kids are watching and the longer he vacillates, the more they will be placed in the middle, trying to figure out where their allegiance lies — Mom or Dad. (Ex-etiquette rule, No. 1, “Put the children first.”) And now that you are in the mix, the kids also have to figure out exactly where they should put you in their heart(s) as well. If they can see that liking you hurts Mommy, your relationship with them will be an uphill battle — and you live with their dad. Bottom line, whether its dishonesty or not liking confrontation, dad has to figure out what he's doing — his actions affect too many people. If he doesn't soon, then your choice should be obvious. BEIJING, China (April 20, 2014) - Nissan today premiered the Lannia Concept, a global concept addressing the lifestyle of China's rising “Post-80s" generation. Chief Planning Officer Andy Palmer also announced the official launch of the NISMO brand in China. “Lannia Concept joins our growing family of China-focused models," said Palmer. “It was designed by Chinese, built by Chinese for the Chinese people, and ultimately, for the world." He recognized the heavy involvement of the local Chinese teams spanning from market research to design that led to the birth of the Lannia Concept. Its Chinese name, “蓝鸟・印象" (“lan niao, yin xiang") was also announced in honor of the legendary Nissan Bluebird, whose spirit is reborn. SmartInvestor. This is the latest in a series of insightful books, like The Revenge of Geography and The Coming Anarchy, in which Robert D Kaplan, the chief geopolitical analyst at the global intelligence company Stratfor, tries to explain how geography determines destiny - and what we should be doing about it. Asia's Cauldron is a short book with a powerful thesis, and it stands out for its clarity and good sense from the great mass of Western writing on what Chinese politicians have taken to calling their "peaceful development". If you are doing business in China, travelling in Southeast Asia or just obsessing about geopolitics, you will want to read it. Mr Kaplan starts out from some basic economics. More than half of the world's annual merchant fleet tonnage (including four-fifths of all the oil burned in China) passes through the South China Sea. This commerce, Mr Kaplan says, has turned that waterway into "the throat of the Western Pacific and Indian Oceans - the mass of connective tissue where global sea routes coalesce," investing its straits, shoals and islands with extraordinary strategic significance. At the heart of Mr Kaplan's book is a striking analogy that aims to explain what this will mean in the 21st century: "China's position vis-à-vis the South China Sea," he suggests, "is akin to America's position vis-à-vis the Caribbean Sea in the 19th and early 20th centuries". The parallel Mr Kaplan draws is straightforward and convincing. Between 1898 and 1914, the United States defeated Spain and dug the Panama Canal. This allowed Americans to link and dominate the trade of the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans, transforming the meaning of geography. "It was domination of the Greater Caribbean Basin," Mr Kaplan concludes, "that gave the United States effective control of the Western Hemisphere, which, in turn, allowed it to affect the balance of power in the Eastern Hemisphere." In a rather similar way, he suggests, the South China Sea now links the trade of the Pacific and Indian Oceans; consequently, "were China to ever replace the US Navy as the dominant power in the South China Sea - or even reach parity with it - this would open up geostrategic possibilities for China comparable to what America achieved upon its dominance of the Caribbean". Because of this, the South China Sea is "on the way to becoming the most contested body of water in the world". Throughout the book, Mr Kaplan tempers hard-nosed geopolitics with an engaging mix of history and travelogue (no reader is likely to forget his evocative comparisons of Hanoi and Saigon or his description of Borneo's water villages) and also stresses the differences between the two cases as well as the similarities. Probably the biggest of these differences is that in the 1890s the revisionist power in the Caribbean - the US - was militarily stronger than Spain, the status quo power, whereas in the 2010s the revisionist power in the South China Sea - China - is militarily weaker than America, the status quo power. Mr Kaplan is surely right to conclude from this that Beijing is unlikely to risk a military showdown involving Washington any time soon. Instead, he tells us that China will "Finlandise" Southeast Asia. Confronted by the same kind of pressure that czarist Russia applied to its Scandinavian neighbour, Southeast Asia's governments "will maintain nominal independence but in the end abide by foreign policy rules set by Beijing". Because Finlandisation is so different from the way the US threw Spain out of the Caribbean in 1898, the outcome will differ too. "But," Mr Kaplan concludes, "the age of simple American dominance, as it existed through all of the Cold War decades and immediately beyond, will likely have to pass. A more anxious, complicated world awaits us. These sentences might tempt readers to lump Mr Kaplan into the company of "declinists", writers who rejoice in announcing the imminent fall of the American Empire. Mr Kaplan is in fact a leading proponent of the theory of international relations known as realism, which traces its ancestry back 2,500 years to Thucydides. Mr Kaplan is explicit about his intellectual debt to this tough-minded ancient Greek and, like him, glories in stripping away fondly held illusions to reveal the harsh reality of governments nakedly pursuing their own self-interest without concern for values, beliefs or ideology. It is realism that keeps Mr Kaplan's book so refreshingly free of the breathless "oh my God it's worse than you think" prose style that mars so much Western writing on the rise of China. In its place, however, realism encourages a Thucydidean detachment that some readers will find even more alarming. But that, Mr Kaplan says, is the way it has to be, because the struggle over the South China Sea is going to be detached and unemotional. "The fact is," Mr Kaplan observes, "East Asia is all about trade and business. The heroes in Mr Kaplan's story are hard, pragmatic men who recognise this, men like Singapore's Lee Kuan Yew and China's Deng Xiaoping. Realists to their core, both regularly turned on a dime, ditching what had once seemed to be deeply held convictions. Neither had much time for democracy; nor, it seems, does Mr Kaplan. Admitting that such thoughts are "heretical to an enlightened Western mind," he writes that "if you left the South China Sea issue to the experts and to the elites in the region, the various disputes would have a better chance of being solved than if you involved large populations in a democratic process, compromised as they are by their emotions. The solutions that would be reached, though, might not be the ones that most people around the South China Sea would want. One realist after another told him that they did not wish to be Finlandised or to replace America's embrace with China's; but realism teaches us that history is driven more by necessities than desires. "At the end of the day," one Singaporean said, "it is all about military force and naval presence - it is not about passionate and well-meaning talk." He became the 18th player to win his first Champions Tour event in the tour's history. Jimenez, fresh off a strong showing in last weekend's Masters, shot a final-round score of 67 to finish at 14 under par for the tournament, two shots ahead of Bernhard Langer, who shot a 68 and finished at 12 under. Jay Haas (67) finished third at 10 under, with Fred Couples, playing in the last group with Jimenez and Langer on Sunday, shooting a 70 to finish at 9 under. Steve Pate (70), David Frost (69) and Duffy Waldorf (70) all finished at 7 under, with Willie Wood (66), Colin Montgomerie (68), Kenny Perry (71) and Chien Soon Lu (71) finishing at 6 under. SouthFlorida. Dr. Anthony Chapman, 15, carries of salvage from burned home of fire that killed his uncle, Jerry Chapman. 7:23 p.m. A 43-year-old man who went back into the flames of his burning trailer home to save his beloved pet dachshunds has died of injuries sustained in the futile rescue effort, his family said Sunday. Marvin Jerry Chapman, called Jerry, suffered critical burns Friday when a fire broke out in the Ravenswood Estates mobile home he shared with his wife, Doris, according to Chapman's mother, Linda Brown. "They loved those dogs," Brown said of the dachshunds, Princess and Peanut. Chapman, a construction worker, died Saturday afternoon at Jackson Memorial Hospital, the same hospital where he was born, said Brown, 64, who was with him. The fire in the home in the 5200 block of Southwest 22nd Terrace broke out about 7 p.m. Friday, according to Broward Sheriff Fire Rescue. Taken to Memorial Regional Hospital in Hollywood in very critical condition, the victim was subsequently transferred by helicopter to the Burn Center at Jackson, said Fire Rescue spokesman Mike Jachles. Police had not confirmed the name of the victim Sunday night. According to relatives, Chapman suffered burns on his upper body and his feet, but was conscious and able to walk to the ambulance when paramedics arrived. Neighbors heard Chapman yell "Fire," and several people called 911, said Paul Miller, 62, who lives behind the Chapmans. As flames grew higher, Miller said he got a garden hose and began spraying an endangered home next to the burning trailer. Doris Chapman was at work at a nearby retail outlet when the fire started, according to her mother, Betty Wood. Two young men from a block away may have helped Chapman escape the flames initially, relatives said, but he went back inside to find the dogs. "He was able to get one dog in the rear of the trailer, break a window and throw that dog out," said Jachles. But that dog, 4-year-old Peanut, apparently ran back into the home, said Robert Chapman, 34, Jerry's brother. The body of 10-year-old Princess was found under a bed, Robert Chapman said. Peanut has not been recovered. Jachles said the home was fully engulfed in flames when firefighters arrived. On Sunday afternoon, several relatives trod carefully through the charred ruins to salvage what they could. Among the items relatively undamaged they said, were boxes containing some 30,000 lights which the couple put up on the house and in the small yard each Christmas. "My daughter is devastated," said Wood. "In an instant she lost everything, her husband, her dogs, her home. "Jerry used to say, 'We don't have much, but this is our little circle right here.' He risked his life for his babies, and now it's all gone. Jachles said the blaze is under investigation by the Broward Sheriff's fire marshal bureau and the state fire marshal.
