An overly energetic, very small boy and an overly sedate, very large dog are featured in a national television commercial for Petco. The small boy is Allister Kohler, son of Anna native Chad Kohler and his wife, Diane Goderre, who live in Bexley, and grandson of John and Gail Kohler, of Anna. The large dog is Saskia, a mastiff owned by Goderre’s sister and brother-in-law, Nico and Megan Coetzee, of Irvine, Calif. In 2009, when Allister had just turned 1, his family spent Christmas with the Coetzee family, then living in Cincinnati. “(Saskia) had apparently exhausted herself watching everyone open up their gifts,” Kohler said recently. “She fell asleep in front of the Christmas tree. At some point, my son crawled over to the dog and started lying on her, tugging on her ears, climbing over her, you name it. All the while, the dog just lay there, motionless. Nothing seemed to bother the poor dog. Nico recorded the encounter and posted it on Youtube, where it went viral, according to Kohler. More than 480,000 people have looked at it at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VY0Ph63NVBQ. “Four years later, in late 2013, my brother-in-law was contacted by advertising executives from Vitro Agency, a San Diego-based ad agency that is running a national ad campaign for PetCo, the specialty pet retailer with over 1,300 stores nationwide, including one in Troy,” Kohler said. “The idea was to use homemade videos of people and their pets. They asked for our permission to use a short clip, and we happily agreed to it. The Kohlers were told that the ad agency was looking at thousands of videos, so the chances that the one featuring Allister would get chosen were slim. But, it was chosen and Kohler and Goderre were told March 17 that it had made the cut. “The very next day, my aunt in Florida texted me and said she saw Allister on TV during ‘The Today Show.’ Then we started hearing from relatives in D.C., Arizona, Maryland, California. It’s been a lot of fun,” Kohler said. He and Goderre had to tell Allister, now 5, that it was he in the ad when they showed it to him on their Kindle. “Allister isn’t really old enough to understand that he’s on national TV. When he sees the ad, he’s pretty much like, ‘Hey, that’s me.’ Then he goes back to annoying his little brother, (Truman, 2),” Kohler said. Kohler graduated from Anna High School in 1994. He and his wife are both attorneys working in Columbus. Allister is also the grandson of Madeline Goderre, of Cincinnati, and the late David Goderre.
