Thousands of faithful attend the 2014 Hollywood Bowl Easter service, which was a joint effort organized by the Christian Assembly Church of Eagle Rock, Fellowship Monrovia and Bel Air Presbyterian Church. Under a powerful sun, thousands flocked to a festive Easter service Sunday at the Hollywood Bowl to hear messages of hope, faith and redemption. The morning outdoor service — which was hosted by three Los Angeles-area churches — was punctuated with joyful singing led by a large voice worship choir, a professional orchestra and a modern live worship band led by Christian artist Tommy Walker. “This Resurrection Day is a cosmic event,” the Rev. David McKechnie, interim pastor of Bel Air Presbyterian Church, told the crowd on a stage adorned with white Lilies and 1,000 stems of various yellow flowers. “It’s really the hinge of history. It’s the most important day of this year or of any year. In addition to that, it’s a victory over death, fear and inhumanity. Meaningless is canceled. We have lots to celebrate. Bel Air Presbyterian Church, which has helped organize Easter at the Hollywood Bowl since 2006, joined forces with Christian Assembly Church of Eagle Rock for a second consecutive year and for the first time with Fellowship Monrovia, which opened two years ago in the San Gabriel Valley. The first Easter service at the iconic venue occurred in 1921 and though it’s had some interruptions, it’s been an annual tradition for years. Easter is to Christians what the Super Bowl is to many Americans — the most important day of the year, the Rev. Enock De Assis, associate pastor at Bel Air Presbyterian Church, said. “We came to celebrate in the city because we love the city,” De Assis, a Lake Balboa resident, said before the service. “We came to the center of Hollywood at a time when there are so many conversations about faith and culture and all the recent movies we’ve had, like ‘Noah’ and ‘Heaven Is for Real.’ It’s so important for churches to continue to be in dialogue with the city where live. Rev. Albert Tate of Fellowship Monrovia, whose congregation has grown to 1,500 members in two years, gave a rousing sermon arguing that the resurrection is relevant to people’s lives today. When Jesus rose from the dead, he proved to Satan — who thought he had a ‘checkmate’ — that the match had not ended, he said. “The resurrection matters because (Jesus) is on the throne,” Tate told the crowd. “You’re not without hope. You’re not without promise. You’re not with purpose. The King has a plan for you. He has promises for you. His love is yours to be received. After years of wanting to see Easter at the Hollywood Bowl, Linda Holt was thrilled she had finally made the trip from Orange County this year with her adult daughter, Jenna. “It was inspiring and emotional; it was just fabulous,” Holt, who attends a church in Tustin, said after the service. “We got here at about 8:30 a.m. this morning and saw (the crowd) growing and growing. It was wonderful. Ryan Elliott of North Hills attended the service with his wife, Jayne, and her mother, Valerie Gordon, of Northridge. Elliott, a member of Bel Air Presbyterian who has attended the service in past years, said while the weather was quite warm this year, he enjoyed hearing sermons from pastors of the other two churches. “You don’t realize all the great churches around here; to get a sample from each was a really good thing,” he said. “Sometimes we get prejudiced about our own church and say ‘ours is the best. Shauna Black of Monrovia attended the service for the first time with her husband James, and their three young children, Jaiah, 5, Jai, 3, and Jairen, 1. “It’s amazing; these three churches getting together in a space like this,” she said. “Good service. New Senior Pastor for Bel Air Presbyterian Church, Rev. Drew Sams, 33, of Thousand Oaks was also introduced to the crowd on Sunday. Although he grew up in Los Angeles and had attended many concerts and orchestral performances at the Bowl, this was his first time celebrating Easter here, he said. “It’s a mix of emotions,” Sams, who attended Bel Air Presbyterian as a college student at USC, said before the service. “It’s exciting.
