Photograph by: LARRY MCDOUGAL , CALGARY HERALDOften, the moments that last from the triumphant occasions in a public person’s professional life aren’t the ones replayed endlessly on ESPN Classic or in highlight montages. No, the little things, the quiet times, the small details, offbeat, quirky recollections, are what linger. March 25th, 1989 is no different. For left winger Colin Patterson, perhaps the most fond remembrance is of sitting in the old Montreal Forum, a shrine, beside Lanny McDonald, an icon, in the gathering silence before puck-drop for Game 6. “The rooms were so small, and there was this pillar there,” recalls Patterson a quarter-century later, “so nobody could see us. Lanny looked at me, kinda smiled, and said ‘You know, Patter, I scored my first goal in this building. I’d like to score my last goal here.’ And I said: ‘Mac, know what? I’d love to get one, too. “Sure enough, we both scored that game. For backup netminder Rick Wamsley, who saw all of 20 minutes action during the two-month run, the cameo-keepsake moment occurred afterwards, in the chaos of a Stanley Cup-winning dressing room. “I’m bent over to get a champagne bottle,” reminisces the Ottawa Senators’ goaltending coach. “It’s bedlam in there, right? Those tiny, tiny rooms. So cramped. And Theo (Fleury)’s already down low like this” — bends down and begin to furiously shake an imaginary bottle of Dom Pérignon — “and he uncorks it. Pop! Just fires up and hits me right in the middle of the forehead. “The first thing I’d stopped in a month. All these years later, what spits out of the memory banks first for coach Terry Crisp is an absurd bit of hi-jinx involving his friend and assistant, Tom Watt. “To this day,” he grunts with delight, “what sticks in my mind is Tom Watt. After the game. We’ve won. Well, Tom Watt is just sitting on a little bench with his back up against the wall. He’s got one of those championship caps on, with the tag still attached, hanging there. It’s on backwards. “The emotion, the adrenalin, is still pumping, of course. “He’s holding a beer in one hand, crazy look on his face, and he says ‘You know, Crispie. This, right now, blows my mind ...’ Then he leans back, the beak of the cap up against the wall, and as he pushes his head back the friggin’ hat lifts off his head like the lid off a pot. “We laughed SO hard. Like four-year-olds. As if it was the funniest thing in the world. Ever. “I can still close my eyes and see it. Tom leaning back, the cap lifting up … ‘You know, Crispie, this, right now, blows my mind. “But that’s what happens when you win a Stanley Cup. It turns you back into a kid. Those kids, the Calgary Flames’ class of ’89, have all grown up, gotten older, moved on, of course. They’re greyer (or thinner) up top and in most cases heavier around the middle now. Businessmen and oilmen and coaches and junior hockey GM. Fitness gurus and human-rights advocates and colour commentators and radio pundits. Life doesn’t stop just because you fulfil a lifelong ambition. But in this town they remain caught and frozen in time somehow. The indelible images of that championship march from Vancouver to L.A., through Chicago and finally Montreal remain etched in our minds. And most especially from May 25th. McDonald, out of the press box and back in the lineup, peeling away after scoring off a lovely pass from an impossibly young, impossibly prolific Joe Nieuwendyk. The old and the new, collaborating on the culmination of a dream.The indomitable one, Doug Gilmour, swatting a waist-high puck past Patrick Roy to score. Local boy Mike Vernon’s arms raised in triumph at the end. Al MacInnis hoisting the Conn Smythe Trophy and doing the “I’m going to Disneyland!” advertising op. The crowd at the Forum, still shocked, classy enough to stick around to stand and applaud the men who’d just vanquished their heroes. No intruders had ever hoisted the Cup on that hallowed ice.If anyone symbolized the victory, gave it additional emotional resonance, that man, of course, was Lanny McDonald. It was his Cup as much as Calgary’s.“It had been a tough year,” admits McDonald, in and out of the lineup all season, all playoffs, as a new generation began to make its imprint.“I’d be the first to admit it. When you felt you still have something to contribute from a playing standpoint and from a leadership standpoint, it’s tough. I feel very, very fortunate to have had the finish I did.“I found out I was going back into the lineup after warm-up. (Assistant coach) Doug Risebrough called me into the trainers’ room. He didn’t even say it, in those words — ‘You’re in the lineup.’ All he said was ‘Do you know where you’ve got to be in all situations?’ That was his way of telling me.“I’ll never forget, I’m looking over Riser’s shoulder and there’s Bearcat (trainer Murray) kinda peeking around the corner — Riser’d kicked him out of the room — and he let out a whoop, then goes into the room to tell the rest of the players. And I heard a little bit of a cheer. So it was pretty cool.”Even cooler, the goal, THAT goal, the one everyone remembers, snapping the puck past Patrick Roy at 4:24 of the second period, only three minutes after the Habs had tied the game 1-1.“My father, who’s no longer with us, didn’t even think that was the best thing I did,” notes McDonald, with some amusement. “Even though I scored the goal, he always thought the better move that night was when I knocked Larry Robinson down on a check just before I scored. That, knocking down Larry, was his favourite moment.“My favourite? Twofold. The goal, of course, and what an unbelievable pass combination between Hakan Loob and Nieuwendyk. Then afterwards, the surreal, calm feeling in the dressing. As excited as I was, just sitting back and watching the young guys whoop and holler was so much fun. Almost an out-of-body experience.”Patterson scored first that night before Claude Lemieux equalized 1:23 into the second period for the Canadiens, desperate to send the series back west for a deciding game. McDonald’s heroics were then followed by the first of two from the indomitable Doug Gilmour. “A power play,” recalls Gilmour, now GM of his hometown Ontario Hockey League Kingston Frontencas, on his first on the night. “I took a backhand, knocked it out of the air and it went five-hole on Patrick. Obviously stuff like that’s not planned. I don’t know … it just went in, my hands were up, we had the lead.”At 18:57, he then lifted the puck into an empty Canadiens’ net and the Flames into history, 4-2.“As soon as it went in, somebody ran me. I think it was (Brian) Skrudland. When I got up, and this is what I remember most, there were three former St. Louis guys right there. Me, Mully and Rob Ramage. I thought that was pretty fitting.“Only one thing puzzled me, though. I know I had Pat Burns as a coach later (in Toronto) but down two goals they never pulled the goalie again.”Ever summon up enough courage to ask Burnsie why?“No,” laughs Gilmour. “No way. Not him.”What many of those didn’t realize at the time, the young ’uns, was what the Lanny McDonald already knew. The Stanley Cup trail is hard, unforgiving. It had taken him 16 long years to reach the gates of Olympus.Nieuwendyk and Joe Mullen would get there twice more. Vernon would go on to do it again in Detroit. But for most, old and young, even if they couldn’t have realized it at the time, that night represented the high-water-mark of their hockey careers.“I remember Joe tearing up on the blueline line when they were handing the Stanley Cup to Lanny,” says Nieuwendyk’s Whitby, Ont., buddy, Gary Roberts is reminiscing, “and I’m saying to to him ‘Hey, that was easy. How many more of those are we going to win?’ Kinda like ‘(Bleep), we’re only 23, buddy. What are you getting so worked up about.’ I shouldn’t have said it. It must’ve cursed me. He went on to win two more. And I didn’t win another one.“So that night, on the blueline, watching Jim (Peplinski) and Huntsy and Lanny go out there, seeing Joe tearing up on the blueline when Lanny lifted the Cup, is what I remember most. And me, like ‘Relax, guys we’re going to win more of these. A LOT more.’ ”Roberts chuckles softly, shakes his head at the folly of youth.“And now here we are, 25 years later.
